Denise’s May Newsletter

05/01/2010

Hello Readers,

That old cliché about time flying certainly holds true as May marks the first anniversary of this web site. I’m amazed by how quickly this year has passed and even more so by how much the web site has changed over that brief span of time. Having begun with only the home, biography and blog pages, I’ve enjoyed adding features and pages since then and I hope you’ve enjoyed reading them.

And May also marks two great celebrations: Mother’s Day and the unofficial start of summer on Memorial Day. So, Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers and then let’s get ready for a spectacular summer!

Here’s what May holds at my web site:

Home and Garden
Shopping for home décor items is definitely on my list of favorite activities. Finding pieces that are beautiful and unique is the best part. And locating these wonderful items in terrific local shops makes shopping even better.

So, you can imagine how much I’ve enjoyed the “researching” and writing about the local home décor shops I recently profiled in a series of articles. But having completed them, I’ve decided to end my stint as a home and garden writer. While I may occasionally write more decorating articles spotlighting these great shops, since I don’t have time to write about everything I like, I’m moving on to other topics. With a link to all these home décor articles are on my web site, you can still check them out any time.

Christian Living
If you’re at all like me, once God answers your prayer, you thank Him and move on. But I was wondering if, perhaps, my behavior is a bit shortsighted. Maybe going a step further and praying about the additional details of the matter might reap spiritual blessings that I haven’t even considered. And maybe that was God’s real plan all along.
Entitled “God’s Plan,” this month’s Christian Living article considers the possibilities of how different our individual lives might be if God were in the details. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Education
Did you know that student loans for college have been totally revamped and that current and future college students will begin reaping the benefits as early as this July? What about the No Child Left Behind Law —with all the criticism of this law enacted under former President Bush, did you know that President Obama has proposed significant changes that will have an individual impact on every child? And one more thing, if your child is gifted, how would you know? And what can you do about it?
These are among the topics of articles I’ve recently written. You can find links to these and others on the left side of the blog page. And speaking of the blog, we discussed threats against teacher tenure, the increasing push for merit pay and the impact of the economy on students, just to name a few topics. May brings fresh issues for discussion, so please stop by each week and voice your opinions.

Book Events
This summer I’ll be using activities from my new book, The Social Studies Helper as I conduct a series of three education workshops in conjunction with the College Board. Metro Atlanta teachers who might be interested in attending may contact me for details.
Book signings are also in the works. As these become firm, I’ll provide you dates, times and places. It looks like it’s going to be a busy summer!
